Development of the Design for reconstruction and upgrading of the Fish Hatchery in Foca is implemented during 2023 in three phases, according to technical specification – Terms of reference for Reconstruction and upgrading:

  • Phase 1 includes site visit, inspection of existing documents from 1990, geodetic surveying, implementation of geological, hydrological and other investigation works, hydrological-morphological and hydraulic analyses of the river basin and Bjelava and Drina river channels, fiscal-chemical, microbiological and biological water analyses, analyses of available and foreseen capacities of the hatchery, defining the level of details for SCADA system and development of the measures on rehabilitation, upgrading and reconstruction of the hatchery and development of the Preliminary Design.
  • Phase 2 included development of the Main Design upgrading (technological, construction, mechanical and electro phase) in accordance with agreed Plan of measures for rehabilitation, upgrading and reconstruction of the hatchery.
  • Phase 3 included development of technical specification and techno-economical study based on which financial sustainability of the system was reconsidered.

Within Preliminary Design of rehabilitation, reconstruction and upgrading there are two options which would be optimum for hatchery, namely:

  • Option A fish farm for producing juvenile fish,
  • Option B, fish farm producing edible fish beside juvenile fish.

All relevant circumstances were considered and option “B” was agreed and developed in details based on the Preliminary Design and additional technical and economic analyses implemented within the Main Design. According to it, fish farm was designed with the original purpose of producing the spawn of brook trout and huchen, while consumption of the edible fish is additional activity.

Layout of agreed solution “B” – production of spawn and edible fish

Production facilities of the fish farm which create entire facility for production of the spawn and edible fish – brook trout are following:

  • Spawning pool
  • On growing pool
  • Fattening pools
  • Broodfish pool

Facilities for water supply are following:

  • Existing gravitational intake and supply of water to the hatchery from Bjelava river, 500 l/s capacity operating as priority intake in all cases except high turbidity and small quantities of water (summer period):
    • Water intake with sand trap,
    • Supply pipeline,
    • Settling tank.

Newly design facilities are:

  • Water intake from Drina River (as alternative for water intake on Bjelava river),
  • Facility for filtration of 60 l/s for demands of hatchery with accessory facility where blowers are located,
  • Distribution of water for hatchery facilities with accessory measuring equipment.
Scheme of technological process

Additional facilities and elements within the assembly facility:

  • Laboratory
  • Room for accommodation of employees and office
  • Room for food preparation and storage

Expected production parameters- foreseen technological processes for hatchery are as follows:

  • Supply of 500 l/s of water for maximum fish farm production capacity, out of that 60 l/s for hatchery and that water, in case of turbidity, should be treated at the filter plant. Other facilities can accommodate 250 l/s (growing pools), as well as other facilities with water flow from one facility to another, but also possibilities of fresh water supply from the settlement tank.
  • Spawning incubation capacity is up to 2.000.000 spawn pieces.
  • Hatchery capacity of growing up to 1.000.000 magots and spawns up to 3 months old.
  • On growing capacity up to 500.000 pieces of spawn 12-13 cm long.
  • Production of 20.000 kg/year of edible fish – brook trout.
